The Hawker Hurricane was a fighter designed in the late 1930s and was out-classed by newer German fighters during the Battle of Britain (1940). However, it was a ‘rugged gun platform’ for attacking the German bombers and was easily repaired. The more delicate Spitfires were in their element when dogfighting with the bombers’ fighter escort.
The reliable Hurricanes found new life as fighter bombers - once relieved of its bomb load the Hurricane became a fighter again. In ‘second tier’ aviation zones away from European cities (e.g. Africa and Asia) Hurricanes soldiered on until newer fighters and ground attack aircraft ‘trickled down’.

Southampton Sky Line on Flickr.
Driving in to Southampton the other night over the Itchen Bridge and it struck me how beautiful the skyline here is on a clear night, so I photographed it.
Someone has too much time on their hands… which they cleverly spend carving these awesome banana sculptures!
